Discharge from Libby Dam will decrease from 6000 cfs to 45oo cfs on October 2. Discharge of 45oo cfs will be maintained throughout October. The Kootenai is still in excellent shape and conditions are great. The mornings are chilly and it appears we’re seeing the first change in weather for the season. Bright, sunny days have given way to high cumulus clouds and fall is definitely in the air now. There’s no need to rush onto the water at first light. Fall fishing is about bankers hours. Look for fish to start feeding in earnest as the day warms up and look for best dry fly fishing in the afternoons. Hopper may still move fish later in the day but it’s time to start thinking about hatches of blue winged olives. Small attractor patterns and parachute adams will become standard fair in the coming days. Don’t overlook ants if there’s a bit of warmth and sunshine and it’s also time to fish long casts and 6x tippet. 4500 cfs is great for wading but water is also gin clear so if you can see fish keep in mind they’ve already seen you. There’s still plenty of great fishing to be had and no real nasty weather in the forecast. Cloud cover will help blue winged olive hatches and they should start seriously popping any day.
