Montana Fly Fishing: LOC Missouri Spring Fling

Monday, May 31st, 2010

LOC’s annual Missouri spring fling is in high gear and the mighty Mo has been fishing extremely well.  Several parties have already put big numbers of big fish on the board and LOC guides and guests have lots of photos of smiling faces and bent rods.

The crew from pal Andy Bonzagni’s Concord Outfitters in Boston started the spring fling in early May.  March browns and blue winged olives provided some awesome early season dry fly fishing and the highlight of the trip included a double on big browns to the tune of 21 and 22 inches!  That’s 43 inches of Missouri River brown trout in the net at the same time.  Dick Smith and company always keep us laughing and always fish extraordinarily well and the Mo never slowed down for their trip either.  Jeff Pavlovich from Orvis Chicago hosted a great group of anglers and LOC guides continued to take photos of bruiser rainbows and browns through the middle of the month.  Dick Barnett and brother Bob had another over the top trip with rainbows ripping line and busting tackle every day and Gerry Bertero posted over the top numbers and a personal best for Tim and Gerry with a 24 inch brown caught off the bank from their hands and knees in 12inches of water with a little parachut Adams!  We’ll be on the Missouri through the middle of June and still have availability so give a shout if you feel like seeing your backing!!!

As much as we love being on the Mo for the early season, LOC guides are really looking forward to a great season on the Kootenai and we expect it to be fishing well by mid-June.  See you then!

Montana Fly Fishing Report: Kootenai River

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Cool weather and rain continues here in Kootenai country and it’s a wonderful thing!  Recent moisture has been a bonus to local streams and rivers.  Water forecasts are now much better and run-off has officially started.  Expect big water on the Kootenai for the next couple weeks.  Dishcarge from Libby Dam will be increasing to 17,000cfs this week and will continue to increase through the first week of June.  Dishcharge in excess of 25,000cfs is expected around June 7.

Decent fishing opportunities can be had until discharge exceeds approximately 20,000cfs.  Concentrate your efforts in slower water like runs, back eddies, and boulder gardens.  It’s pretty much a nymphing game and most important to get the flies down.  Keep in mind with big flows you have to penetrate the top two feet of the water column quickly in order to be effective.

Local small streams are actually clear and in good shape.  Some drainages are a bit high and water temps are still chilly but if you feel like throwing streamers there are fish to be found.  Concentrate efforts in slower runs and deep pools as fish have not yet made move to faster water.

All in all there’s some decent fishing to be had in the area but you just have to poke around.
