Montana Fly Fishing Report
Kootenai River Montana (updated November 21, 2008)
The Kootenai continues to fish really well as late summer turns to early fall. Cool weather and recent rain has made for some excellent conditions. Dry fly fishing is still the order of the day and fish are still really looking up for food. Discharge from Libby Dam will likely be around 6000-8000 cfs throughout the fall which is terrific for wading anglers as well as float fisherman. Hoppers are still bringing good action during warmer parts of the day.
Clark Fork River Montana (updated November 21, 2008)
Hoppers fished with a bead head dropper are moving some larger fish throughout the day and other terrestrials like ants and beetles have been providing top water action as well. What with cooler weather and super clear water, smaller dries are also becoming important. Do consider size 14 parachute adams, royal wulffs, and tiny bead head droppers. Caddis are still active during afternoons and fish are still excited by a good, old elk hair or Goddard caddis fished dead drift in about 2-4 feet of faster water.
Kootenai River Tributaries Montana (updated November 21, 2008)
All Kootenai drainage tributaries are presently low but in good shape due to cooler weather. Cover lots of water, fish attractor patterns and hoppers in faster water, and look for fish in deeper buckets.
