Spring fishing in Montana can offer some fantastic early season opportunities.
The spring fishing season in Montana includes the months of March and April. Usually by at least mid-March winter is loosening its grip, the sun is higher in the sky and once day light savings occurs, the whole world changes. Runoff (spring snowmelt) usually starts in earnest toward the end of April providing about a six week window of good fishing conditions on rivers and stream across the state of Montana.
Nymphing and streamer fishing are always productive during spring. Water temperatures are still chilly so insect activity can be inconsistent. That said, there are some good spring hatches here in Montana and knowing them will help with success.
