The Kootenai River is in great shape and fishing pretty well.  Discharge from Libby Dam is currently 6500.  This time of year flows will likely decrease to 4000 cfs for late fall/early winter.

Late fall is a terrific time to be on the water and while hatches are dwindling, this time of year baetis and midge will always be popping somewhere on the river.

Dry fly action is still decent during the afternoons.  Big bugs like chubbies and a long dropper of at least thirty inches will carry the day.  Perdigons and duracells are working well at the moment.

Nymphing is super solid again.  Fish are moving into slower runs and pools and spending less time in riffles.  With flows at 6500 there's no need to go super deep or heavy.  Run a couple perdigons about four or five feet from an indicator and you should be fine.

Big fish are always on the prowl this time of year.  Streamer action is heating up.  It's still not fast, but it has been bringing some thicker fish.
