KOOTENAI RIVER MONTANA FISHING REPORT 2-17-2025
This Kootenai River Montana fishing report is being brought to you by Orvis Endorsed Linehan Outfitting. This report will be updated weekly to provide current conditions, weather, hatches, patterns, and flows to our local waters and across the state.
Flows from Libby Dam: This time of year expect fluctuations in flows from 8000cfs-20,000cfs. As I write flows are steady at approximately 4000cfs which offers good conditions.
Hatches: midge, baetis
In-flow from Lake Koocanusa: approximately 4000cfs.
Water temperature at stilling basin below Libby Dam: approximately 36 degrees
patterns: zebra midge, Uke's brown perdigon, wire worm, perdigons, big streamers in white, black and red
It's the middle of February and it's still chilly, and fishing opportunities on the Kootenai this time of year are often minimal. Generally speaking, flows will fluctuate from Libby Dam for power production. Steady flows might offer some good opportunities so keep your eye on the daily flow schedule. Steady flows under 12,000cfs can offer some fishing.
Don't expect a big day if you brave the winter conditions here on the Kootenai River. Water temps are very cold, fish are lethargic, and that means no dry fly fishing at all. Nymphing can be good. Stick with slow currents, pools, and softer runs. Get the flies down. Bump them in the nose and you may get lucky.
Streamer fishing is best bet if you're looking for one solid fish. Again, get the fly down. Fish it slowly and thump and pulse like it's a wounded minnow. If you get a pull, stop it. Let it sink. Then pulse it again.
Snowpack to date is exceptional. Right now the Kootenai basin is 117% of average. This bodes extremely well for water conditions this season especially since we will get more snow before winter ends.
