The Kootenai River is in great shape!  Low flows offer great drift fishing and walk/wade access as well.  It's clear and very fishable.  We've had some boats on the water and anglers are finding a few fish.

All boat ramps are pretty clean and free of snow at this point.  Keep in mind the river is closed to fishing from the Libby Dam downstream to mouth of the Fisher River.

Nymphing is super solid out there right now.  Look for fish in slower currents, soft seams, cover, and pools.  They are not necessarily in faster water this time of year. Concentrate efforts on walking speed currents with depth.  Indicator should be set approximately four-five feet from top fly.  Depending on water depth, you may want to add a split shot but tungsten perdigons have been doing just as well and getting down just fine.

Dry fly action has picked up nicely the last few days.  Around 2:00 pm baetis, March browns, and caddis have been popping and fish are looking up if they have bugs to eat.  Purple haze with do the trick for the most part.  Look for rising fish, give them a good drift, and they should eat.

Right now, big fish are on the prowl and looking for a big meal.  With low flows the entire water column is penetrable.  Depth Charge sinking tips are perfectly good and stick with soft runs three to ten feet deep.  The streamer bite has been a day by day thing.  Cloud cover will help.  Don't expect numbers and if you get a couple or a few you've done well.

The Boston Red Sox are off to a pretty solid start.  As I write, I've got one eye on the game and it's the home opener in Fenway.  This team has talent.  At the moment pitchers are holding their own and have had some terrific outings.  Bats and defensive led by Cassas and some young blood are keeping the team in the game for 9 straight innings.  Go Sox!
