The Montana spring bear hunting season is almost here. Hunting spring bears is about covering miles, getting into the back country and glassing basins.

If you’re heading out for some spring bear hunting this season, here are a few tips to keep in mind that will help your hunt be more successful.

  1. Start the season in decent shape. Spring bear hunting can mean lots of hiking. Having the ability to go the extra distance will definitely increase chances of success.

  2. Invest in good optics. Spring bear hunting involves lots of hours of glassing and looking through a spotting scope. Having good optics decreases eye strain and general fatigue. You don’t have to invest high dollars for good optics anymore. Many companies offer perfectly good optics that for a reasonable price.

  3. Wear good boots and make sure they’re broken in when you hit the ground.

  4. Always bring a map and compass. Phones and gps units can fail. With a map and compass you can always, without concern, get back to a major road by taking a bearing and heading out. You may be miles from your truck, but you will never be lost.

  5. Concentrate on areas with fresh, green grass. In the spring bears need green grass to jumpstart their digestive system and for the most part, aside from occasional carrion, green grass is the only readily available food source.

  6. Educate yourself on how judge the size of black bears. Judging the size of bears can be difficult since it’s exciting to see a bear to begin with, let alone while you’re hunting. Bear are generally always hunched over and more often than not moving slowly while feeding. This can make them appear way bigger and there’s nothing worse than ground shrinkage. Look for bears that have swagger and look closely at their heads. Mature, bigger bears ears will appear small relative to size of their head.

  7. Be extra careful to not shoot a sow with cubs. Watch a bear you have decided is big enough to harvest for as long you possible can in order to sure there are no cubs. Cubs will often be dozing nearby or even obscured by logs, high vegetation, or topography.

  8. Only take a shout you are confident you can make.

By keeping these tips in mind you can increase the odds of success this spring bear season. Good luck and get after it this season.
