BEST MONTANA DEER RIFLE IS .270 CALIBER
Increasingly there are many calibers that provide enough punch to knock down a big buck. But if you only had one rifle for a Montana deer hunt, which one is best?
In my humble opinion, you can’t go wrong with a .270
The .270 is a high velocity, flat shooting cartridge. With 130-150 grain bullets, which are common for deer, it has approximately 2850 foot pounds per second muzzle velocity. Zero sighted at 100 yards with a 130 grain bullet, it only drops about six inches out to 300 yards. And here’s where it really performs. At 400 yards it’s still carrying substantial velocity and drops only 24 inches. And check this out. At 500 yards it’s still carry slightly over 1000 foot pounds of energy.
What does all this mean? It means that the .270 is a great rifle cartridge for any Montana deer hunt.
If you’re in the thick timber here in the Yaak Valley where shots are typically within 100 yards, it’s got tremendous knock down power. Hold dead on right behind the shoulder and you’ll not have to trail blood very far, if at all. And if you’re hunting mule deer in more open country and have to reach out across a canyon with a longer shot, hold dead on out to 325-350 yards and again, you’ll have good success.
The .270 also has very moderate recoil which makes it very user friendly for all experience levels, body shapes, sizes and ages.
My wife absolutely loves her .270 Tikka. She’s an excellent shot and above all wants a clean kill with minimal follow-up tracking. A heavier grain bullet helps to this end. Does a heavier grain bullet ruin more meat? Not necessarily, that mostly depends on shot placement.
There are many great deer rifle calibers available these days. The .270 is definitely the best.
